‘Game of Thrones’ Creators Benioff & Weiss Are No Longer Making A Star Wars Trilogy
I go to bed early ONE TIME…and this happens. Unbelievable.
Variety is reporting that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are no longer attached to their scheduled Star Wars trilogy, citing “poor time management skills”, basically. You can read their official statement below, but I will say that it sorta sounds like a crock of shit to me…
“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too,” they said in a statement. “Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”
I know they’ve got a big bag from Netflix, but c’mon – you’re telling me they couldn’t work something out with that? They just got no time for Star Wars? Ever? Couldn’t just delay this, even if by a couple years? Wouldn’t Rian Johnson/Kevin Feige/all of the Disney+ shows on the slate pick up the slack? I’m not buying it.
I believe Benioff/Weiss are really stepping away from ‘Star Wars’ (if they ARE really stepping away, and didn’t get axed) because they’re not interested in dealing with the fanbase.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are coming fresh off one of the most heavily criticized pieces of media I’ve ever seen, and hopping into a world where the fans are a thousand times more rabid, irrational, and flat-out MEAN than the one they’re coming from?! No way. Not when they can create original programming not attached to anybody’s “childhood” over on Netflix.
Not to say all Star Wars fans are like this, either, but there is undoubtedly a subsection of fans (who are very vocal) who take this shit waaaaaaay too seriously – and if I’M saying that, it’s a problem. Ahmed Best – the actor who portrayed Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequels – just came forward this past year with stories of suicidal desires he’s faced because of decades worth of personal hate…over a character he played. Kelly Marie Tran was just recently bullied off social media after the release of ‘The Last Jedi’, as well, and let’s not forget the fact that Star Wars fans turned on George Lucas to such a degree that he went, “Fuck it, I don’t want this anymore”, and sold the whole fuckin saga over to Disney. I don’t think I’d want the keys to the kingdom either, if I were them!
It’s a lot of pressure to hit a target roughly the size of a womp-rat!
I’m guessing that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss just wanna make their comeback with a whisper, rather than with a bang, and I really don’t blame them.
In the case that they DIDN’T step away, though, and actually did get axed (invalidating most of this blog) – I think KFC is probably on the right track. Admitting to being clueless and then being like “…and for our next trick: STAR WARS!” probably wasn’t smart.
